St Paul through the Eyes of Marsilio Ficino - Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July, 2012 at Brinscall Hall, Chorley 9am – 4pm
In our studies two towering figures will come together:
St. Paul, a fearless campaigner among the first Christians. His message has stood as a challenge for every age since then.
Marsilio Ficino, “father of the Italian Renaissance”, dedicated to interpreting the philosophy of Plato so that it could be embraced by Christian thinkers of his own day. Towards the end of his life Ficino turned his attention more and more to study St. Paul
Valery Rees is a prominent scholar of the Renaissance. For the last thirty-five years she has been part of the team translating Marsilio Ficino’s letters. She has also lectured, written articles, broadcast and co-edited books on a range of Renaissance themes. With her help we hope to examine at some depth the thinking of these two figures and to discover for ourselves: do St. Paul and Ficino speak to us today?
Each day stands alone. You don’t need to attend both.
The cost for each day, including refreshments and a vegetarian lunch, is £20. To book a place simply click on the Bookings Page . Payment can be made by credit / debit card or PayPal. For more information email us at: philnw@brinscall.org.uk or call freephone 0800 8030 799.

Lecture entitled ‘St Paul – Superhero’ – on Saturday evening, 30th June at Belmont House, Stockport, starting at 7.30pm.
An investigation into what this controversial figure of the early Church meant to Marsilio Ficino, a writer at the heart of the Italian Renaissance with surprisingly modern sympathies.
This talk will be given by Valery Rees, who is a member of the team translating the Letters of Marsilio Ficino at the School of Economic Science. She has written and lectured widely on Renaissance themes and broadcast with Melvyn Bragg on BBC Radio 4′s In Our Time.
The talk will introduce a few of the ideas that Ficino found so compelling in the life and writings of St. Paul, ideas that may be of continuing validity in our own lives.
Valery is preparing a new edition of a work previously only available in Latin, Marsilio Ficino’s Commentary on St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, and has discovered some philosophical gems as well as a few puzzling questions.
Ficino paid special attention to the writings of St. Paul throughout his life, not just as a written text but as the living word of one who had “been caught up into the third heaven”, and who had much to teach the people of the whole Christian world after his conversion. Ficino discusses St. Paul’s experience many times, both in his letters and in the Platonic Theology, but in the closing years of his life he commenced a detailed commentary on the Epistles, apparently completing just twenty-six chapters before he died.
The talk is open to the public and will be of interest to those unable to join either of the study days.
Entrance to this event costs £10 or is free to those who attend both study days. To book a place for this lecture go to the Bookings Page. Payment may be made by credit / debit card or PayPal.
