Self-Discovery through Practical Philosophy

Here is a famous story:

There was once a young lion who, being orphaned as a cub, had been reared by a shepherd in his flock of sheep.  But living its life among sheep, it only knew sheep, ate what the other sheep ate and it made sounds like a sheep. They all lived together in the same meadow eating, sleeping and moving as a herd.  The sheep-lion became very good at spotting dangerous animals, so it guarded the herd at night and moved in front of the herd during the day.

Then one day, on the meadow, a great roar rang out and the herd ran together for safety, except for the sheep-lion, who with a deep stirring in its heart, stopped and turned toward the sound.  Around the tree, came a lion, the largest beast they had ever seen.  The herd bunched closer but out in front, the sheep-lion walked toward the strange beast.

The lion said to it, “What are you doing among these sheep?”
The sheep-lion, its heart beating faster, replied, “I am a sheep.”
The lion simply said, “No, you are not. Come with me.”

two lions at a poolSo he took the sheep-lion to a pool and told it to drink the water. As they both bent down to drink, the sheep-lion saw its own reflection and looking over saw the face of the beast in the still water.  The images looked alike.  Shocked, the sheep-lion drew back from the edge of the water and toward the herd.

But the stranger said, “Do not run away from who you are.  You may have grown up here with a herd of sheep, but you are really a beautiful lion: strong, independent and brave.”

In that moment the sheep-lion realised it was a real lion and, although there was much to learn and new habits to acquire, it never looked back.
